Wieliczka, the Salt Mine

The unique Salt Mine is the only still running mine since the Middle Ages. It is situated 30 minutes of driving from the center of Cracow. There are nine levels of the mine which create 300 km kilometers of walking under ground. The deepest you can go is 327 metres below the sea level. While strolling through the corridors you notice all the stages of mining technology development over time. In 1992 the mine was flooded and this believe it or not was the reason of a radical change in the perception of tourism. In recent years the underground tourist route was visited by over 1,000,000 tourists each year. Many famous people visited the mine. It has been on the list of Unesco’s since many years.
